JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:The Penn State University’s Timothy J. Piazza Center for Fraternity and Sorority Research and Reform invites applications for an exciting opportunity in learning, leading and intervention research. The part time/hourly Program Coordinator (PC) will assist in coordinating a Study and Community of Practice (CoP) entitled: Effective Practice and Learning inFraternity and Sorority Life. This project pilots an analysis of campuses’ fraternity and sorority philosophies, policies, programs, and advising practices for prevention of campus substance misuse emphasizing hazardous drinking, hazing, and other resulting behaviors through a community of practice, learning, and chapter/campus cultural change. Through the application of grounded evidence and the involvement of prevention and intervention experts, the PC will coordinate communication with six campuses as they co-develop and implement custom strategies through an iterative process that will reduce hazardous behaviors.
The significance of this study is that we will create a body of research that can inform professional practice to counter the life-threatening traditions that exist in too many campus communities and collegiate fraternities and sororities. Further, the span of the project is designed to increase campus implementation and adoption of strategies informed by literature, incorporating local knowledge, and reviewed by experts to test and build new knowledge.
The part time Program Coordinator (PC), in collaboration with study partners, plans, administers, and evaluates work with the 6 campuses in the CoP . The PC coordinates and facilitates CoP meetings, assists participating campuses in data collection strategies, and provides resources on evidence-informed hazing and substance misuse prevention strategies.
Attention to detail with excellent organizational skills, including proven ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, determine priorities, and meet deadlines.
Understanding of student development, identity development, intersections, and complexity of social identities, particularly for IFC, MGC, NPHC, and PHC fraternity and sorority members.
Knowledge of behavior change theories and evidence-informed substance misuse and hazing prevention strategies.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team, and to develop mutually beneficial relationships with internal and external partners (e.g., national research/prevention center staff, CoP member institutions, campus fraternity and sorority life and prevention staff).
Personal characteristics including innovation, creativity, the ability to work with diverse groups of people, being a self-starter who can thrive in an environment that is developing, growing, and changing and a passion for excellence.
Strong oral, digital and written communication skills, including confident group facilitation skills.
Experience developing and marketing in-person and virtual events.
