Background

Biographical / Historical

A local club, Nita-Nee, which Kappa Alpha Theta chartered, has been in existence since 1922 as the first local women's fraternity group established on the Penn State campus. On 30 May 1931, Kappa Alpha Theta installed its 60th chapter, Beta Phi, at the then Pennsylvania State College.

During the first years of its life, Beta Phi lived in the Stone House, now Elm Cottage. As more and more clubs and fraternities appeared on campus, there were not enough cottages to go around. As a result, the Thetas sold their few possessions in the Spring of 1949, and that fall moved to McElwain Hall.

The fraternity's philanthropy is Court -Appointed Special Advocates for Children (CASA) and their colors are black and gold. The club is also active in Penn State University's Interfraternity Council Dance MaraTHON.

Scope and Contents

The collection contains the records for the Nita-Nee Club, 1922- 1931 (its history, constitution and bylaws, membership lists, correspondence, and meeting minutes) and the Beta Phi chapter (its history, petitions, meeting minutes, membership lists, correspondence, and programs). Also, includes photographs of both groups' members, buildings, intramurals; a 1928 Nita-Nee pin; and 1981 quilted kite pin cushion.
