The first footage from The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim has just screened. Directed by Kenji Kamayama, the upcoming story set in the world of Middle-earth marks the first major anime venture for The Lord of the Rings. The film, which is based on the works by author J.R.R. Tolkien, will feature Helm Hammerhand, the founder of Helm's Deep, while also introducing new characters. The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim releases later this year, but no trailer has so far been shared.
Per TheWrap, 20 minutes of footage from The War of the Rohirrim was recently screened at an Annecy panel. The footage is said to begin with narration from Miranda Otto's Éowyn, revealing that the film takes place 200 years before Bilbo encounters the One Ring. The footage spotlights the film's new hero, Hèra (Gaia Wise), Helm's daughter, who rejects marriage with Wulf (Luke Pasqualino), thus sparking a great war. TheWrap's report suggests that the film has many of the hallmarks of Peter Jackson's trilogy, but still feels very much like an anime.
Jackson and The Lord of the Rings co-writer Fran Walsh serve as executive producers on The War of the Rohirrim. Their co-writer, Philippa Boyens, also serves as a producer.
Helm Hammerhand Won't Be The Main Focus After All

While it's been known for some time that Otto would be returning in some capacity as Éowyn, the latest footage now reveals how the character features in the film. Since Éowyn wouldn't have been alive during the timeline of The War of the Rohirrim, it appears that Otto's character will be used to frame the narrative, recounting the events as if telling a tale. The footage reveals that it's still a female character that takes center stage, however.
Protagonist Hèra is said to be able to commune with the Great Eagles, and she is eventually thrust into a leadership role with the Rohirrim. TheWrap's report reveals that she eventually calls on the support of an all-female tribe of warriors, who were thought to be lost to history. The War of the Rohorrim, then, certainly has the makings of an epic Lord of the Rings movie, not only further fleshing out a relatively unexplored period of Middle-earth's history, but introducing new characters and grand battles.

2024's Lord Of The Rings Movie Can Finally Fix The Franchise's 2 Worst Mistakes
2024's upcoming animated Lord of the Rings movie, War of the Rohirrim, can fix two huge franchise mistakes from before the Peter Jackson trilogy.
Jackson's The Lord of the Rings movies remain beloved even more than two decades later, and the fact that the footage that has been screened is clearly heavily inspired by these films could help the anime appeal to these same viewers and find success. With The Rings of Power's reviews being somewhat mixed from audiences and critics, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim certainly could capitalize on the widespread love of the franchise. With a release date later this year, an official teaser trailer for the film will hopefully be released in the coming months.
