Mum. Dad, Bonnie and Mac Marc Clair (centre) with Paul Hirst and Charlotte Brown who cut off his locks. CAMP HILL prisoner Marc Clair had a close shave when it came to supporting the restoration of Bern- bridge's first motorised lifeboat. After previously having a brush with the law, community worker Marc, 48, had no qualms when it came to having a brush with Riverside Academy students Charlotte Brown and Paul Hirst, both working to level three NVQs in hairdressing. as they wielded scissors and razors.

So dedicated is he to the restoration project that he some- times works every day of the week in the workshops of Classic Boat Museum. The £150 he raised was a real snip, but hardly scratched the surface of the multi-thousand pound mission to bring the 1922 Langham back to its former glory. Joy Grant, a friend of the museum, said that other people con- nected with the museum should be inspired by Marc's willing- ness to lose two years of hair growth. "Marc is a brilliant worker, he's sometimes down here seven days a week and we very much rely on him in our quest to get the Langham restored in time for the millennium." she said. Marc, due for release in May after a four-year sentence for drug-related matters, used to work in Portsmouth dockyards.

The Langham is being restored at the Classic Boat Museum through subscription, sponsorship and with money raised through appearances of Bembridge's Queen Victoria, which it also restored at a cost of £30,000.
