Kramer vs. Kramer (1979)

Razor sharp picture quality. Very impressive. I miss movies like this. Quiet intensity, intimate, simple, long takes, powerful performances that drive every second of the film.

These I thought had amazing picture quality: Tora Tora Tora, Finding Life Beyond Earth (PBS), and Ghost Rider #2.

Since I'm relatively new to BluRay and discovering all of its magic, I thought it would be fun to start a thread where FSM BluRay freaks can comment about what they've watched lately and gush in the glory of high definition. Posting covers/images are welcome. And yeah we can talk about disappointments, too, but gushing is more pleasant (though when I put in Close Encounters of The Third Kind to check it out, I was horrified). For example...

Yesterday I watched the 50th Anniversary edition of Hitchco*ck's North by Northwest. Holy cow. It really looked incredible. The picture quality was razor sharp. I couldn't get over it. This is what happens almost every time I watch a BluRay. I'm just stunned. And ya know, it sure is nice to see a classic movie with REAL COLORS. Blues and greens and reds and yellows that stand out as opposed to the desaturated boring look that so many modern films have.

This BluRay presentation gets a 10 outta 10 from me!

I just bought this from Amazon based on your recommendation!

Disney over all has done a phenomenal job remastering their animated films for BluRay.

Beauty and the Beast:

All kinds of trouble with this release. Some character outlines appeared to be in blue. (Blue?) and there was a white "halo" effect around the animation line art. I also read they over lightened the film starting back with one of its DVD special editions. I seem to remember some "scarier" scenes being much darker in the theater, and thus added to the dramatic effect.

Regarding the white boarders around the line art and strange line art color I don't know if I simply got a bad BluRay.

Beauty and the Beast is my favourite film of all time, but i still refuse to purchase the Bluray.
Disney has messed up with the colors (saying that this was the original intent), and all the darkness of the original film has been lost.
In addition other scenes too, that didn't involve dark colors and shades, have lost their initial impact.

http://img37.imageshack.us/img37/7839/beautyjj.jpg

look at how the light was in the upper screenshots! Now this effect is lost.
The beautiful morning seems like late afternoon.
the only mediums that still have the original colors are the VHS and Laserdisc.

Those screencaps are horrible. They look NOTHING like any version of the film I've seen including the superb Blu Ray release!

Bambi, Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America are the most recent movies I've watched on Blu ray. All are top quality picture and sound. Now working on Supernatural season 1.
Only partway through it. Looks really good.

The Goldsmith-scored version of The Mummy with Brendan Fraser is one of the most eye popping Blu Ray discs you'll ever see. Just stunning, really.

Three Days Of The Condor is available at a nice price, and the disc is bare bones, but the transfer is fine, sharp and clear with nice grain.

All The President's Men is also a worthwhile BR upgrade. It looks great.

the upper ones are from the Laser Disc (same is in the VHS), and the down ones from the DVD.
The Bluray kept (with some minor tweaks), the color palette of the DVD.
of course these are jpgs so a downgraded quality from the original size of the picture.
But I just wanted to show the difference in colors.
If you have the bluray, just go to the scene that corrseponds to the second screenshot, and compare them.
See how the light from the window looks in the ORIGINAL, and how it looks in the BLuray.
Anyway...

Changing the film title subject for a moment....

Received my "Forever Marilyn" box on Blu ray in this morning's mail. Won't be able to watch any of the films until later this evening.

HOWEVER...the packaging is a MAJOR turn-off/disappointment.

All the discs are slipped into cardboard sleeve sections of two skinny folodout books (book being a relative term). This is the cheapest presentation I can imagine. For a boxed set that wasn't cheap, it seems it was designed to hold the consumer in contempt.

MAJORLY DISAPPOINTED here, Fox.

I'm hoping some enterprising and artistic forum member (i.e., someone who has a way with creating insert art) will do BD case inserts for each title that we can download.

Assuming I can get the discs out of those cheap sleeves without scratching them, they will never be placed back in them.

I'm totally bummed out on this new format. There are absolutely no standards. Every film looks different on BluRay and its a crap shoot with what you end up getting.

I agree in some cases they go to far with noise reduction, (ST TVH) but on the other hand, I've seen films that are way to grainy. Grain maybe inherent in film, but its way to magnified in HD.

If that wasn't enough you get BluRays like Tron Legacy, where they thought it was a great idea to switch from wide screen to full screen mode while the film is playing with no damn way to turn off such a ridiculous feature.

Films from the 40's and 50's do look the best. While 80's and 90's films look like crap.
End results, with a few exceptions I rarely pick up a BluRay films anymore.

Wanted to mention, to those who might like the charming musical "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" (1968), with Dick Van Dyke, that it looks and sounds beauty. And it's priced quite reasonable on Amazon.

Also, I enjoy reading reviews on high-def sites prior to a purchase, and find that invaluable to informing my decision to purchase or not.
